When we think of the risk factors for heart disease, we think of obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, periodontal disease … but now there’s a new risk: marijuana. More and more evidence points to heart disease and other chronic conditions being associated with the use of cannabis.A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association links smoking, vaping, and marijuana consumption to a significantly higher risk of heart attack and stroke—even if the user had no existing heart conditions or did not previously smoke or vape tobacco. While both daily and nondaily use of cannabis was associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, the risk of stroke rose 42% and the risk of heart attack rose 25% with daily use of cannabis.Be sure to check out the latest episode of Medical History Mysteries "Marijuana: A new risk factor for heart disease" as we take a behind-the-scenes look at cannabis and its effects, and why they matter to the dental professional.Watch the episode here: https://lnkd.in/em2mkaV6

“As this paper will mention in the following pages, however, delusions and hallucinations are not the only negative effects stemming from the consumption of marijuana. Cardiovascular diseases, depression, anxiety, and violence are also among the common negative effects of marijuana.”

Very curious how the long terms effect are going to play out for Ozempic and similar drugs used for Type 2 Diabetes, but also now…weight loss.It surely feels like the new fad that doctors are prescribing at free will, ads all over looking as if your life is so good you just made it to heaven. The plaintiff here seems to be a type 2 diabetic that maybe needed it.I’m more concerned with the misdiagnosis for weight loss. One can say type 2 and obesity go directly hand in hand. But where does it start? Do incentives work where doctors prescribe obesity at an earlier onset?Do patients have a say just because they want to lose weight?Over 10,000 claims on the effects this drug has on people already. Gastrointestinal paralysis sure sounds like a direct correlation to these drugs. But hey I’m no doctor. It’s upsetting to hear I don’t have my full supply of insulin while insulin is being mass produced and marketed for “weight loss” however.More to come on this I am sure.Yet nobody will have to take responsibility.Fining people for millions after they made billions on it isn’t answer. #diabetesawareness #diabetescare https://lnkd.in/gnmWpfNX

Drug overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, with opioids being the most common type of drug involved. The CDC estimates that there are more than 1,000 emergency room visits daily related to the misuse of opioids and about 91 opioid overdose deaths every day. By correcting the root cause of your pain, using opioids becomes unnecessary. Foot Levelers custom orthotics have been proven in a clinical study to significantly reduce low back pain. Using data from the National Inpatient Sample Database, an analysis of patients admitted with a COVID diagnosis found that, compared to a 1:1 matched sample of non-users, cannabis users (n=2,603) were:- 36% less likely to be intubated (p<0.01);- 61% less likely to develop ARDS (p<0.01);- 47% less likely to experience acute respiratory failure (p<0.01);- 32% less likely to develop severe sepsis with multiorgan failure (p<0.01); and- 52% less likely to die (p<0.01).The authors explain that "The beneficial effect of marijuana use may be attributed to its potential to inhibit viral entry into cells and prevent the release of proinflammatory cytokines, thus mitigating cytokine release syndrome."Would be interesting to see if these results differ by method of consumption. The FDA has approved Eli Lilly's drug, tirzepatide (currently known as Mounjaro), to treat obesity. Initially, it was for people with type 2 diabetes, but now it's available for those with obesity too, even if they don't have diabetes. This means more people with obesity can now get insurance coverage for the drug. Experts are calling this approval a big step forward in obesity treatment. The drug will be called Zepbound when used specifically for obesity. It's approved for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above, or those with a BMI of 27 and above who also have weight-related complications like hypertension.
