In a recent episode of "Medical History Mysteries," we dove into the fascinating world of ginger and its potential health implications. While many of us love the flavor of ginger in our food and drinks, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.Ginger supplements have often been touted for their ability to alleviate motion sickness, boost endurance, settle upset stomachs, and even serve as aromatherapy. However, it's essential to separate fact from fiction when it comes to these claims. One of the key concerns with ginger is its potential to increase the risk of bleeding and hypoglycemia. While it may not have significant drug interactions, ginger's antiplatelet and hypoglycemic effects can pose risks, especially for patients with diabetes or those undergoing surgery. When discussing medical history with patients, it's crucial to inquire about their use of dietary supplements, including ginger. By asking the right questions and staying informed about the potential risks and benefits of ginger supplementation, healthcare providers can better tailor treatment plans to ensure patient safety.Ultimately, while ginger can add flavor and aroma to our culinary experiences, it's essential to approach its use with caution, particularly in the context of healthcare and medical treatment. Awareness and open communication between patients and healthcare providers are key to navigating the complexities of ginger supplementation safely and effectively.Watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/ekJKicCs

When we think of the risk factors for heart disease, we think of obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, periodontal disease … but now there’s a new risk: marijuana. More and more evidence points to heart disease and other chronic conditions being associated with the use of cannabis.A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association links smoking, vaping, and marijuana consumption to a significantly higher risk of heart attack and stroke—even if the user had no existing heart conditions or did not previously smoke or vape tobacco. While both daily and nondaily use of cannabis was associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, the risk of stroke rose 42% and the risk of heart attack rose 25% with daily use of cannabis.Be sure to check out the latest episode of Medical History Mysteries "Marijuana: A new risk factor for heart disease" as we take a behind-the-scenes look at cannabis and its effects, and why they matter to the dental professional.Watch the episode here: https://lnkd.in/em2mkaV6

A new version of Tylenol? What's that about? In the dynamic landscape of medicine, innovation often introduces new challenges.A recent development in acetaminophen, packaged as gummy bites for children, has raised concerns due to the potential for overdose. With acetaminophen overdoses leading to 50,000 hospitalizations annually and standing as a primary cause of liver failure, caution is paramount. Children may unknowingly view these gummies as harmless treats, unaware of the potent medication they contain. Furthermore, acetaminophen's widespread presence in various over-the-counter medications exacerbates the risk. Safe usage guidelines suggest tailoring dosages to a child's weight and adhering strictly to recommended limits. It's crucial to scrutinize product labels for accurate information, as some products labeled as Tylenol may not contain acetaminophen, while others, like Advil Dual Action and Motrin Dual Action, may contain both ibuprofen and acetaminophen. In dentistry, where acetaminophen is commonly prescribed, awareness is vital to prevent inadvertent overdose. By prioritizing thorough comprehension, accurate dosage calculations, and comprehensive medical histories, we can ensure safe and effective acetaminophen usage, safeguarding patient well-being. Vigilance and informed decision-making are essential in navigating the complexities of medication administration. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and prioritize safety above all else.

Would you believe it? Just when we thought we were done with measles, it's making a comeback. With COVID and all the other challenges we're facing, now we have to worry about this highly contagious disease too.Measles, spread through saliva, coughing, and bodily fluids, is back—especially in Florida, but not limited to just one state. Travel plays a big role in its resurgence, with unprotected travelers bringing it home.Even if you thought you were in the clear with the MMR vaccine, some may need a booster, especially considering travel plans. But here's the catch: not everyone is vaccinated, and that poses a risk, particularly in healthcare settings like dental offices.Imagine one unvaccinated team member or patient—it could turn the dental office into a source of infection. That's why it's crucial to stay informed, especially if you or someone you know is immunocompromised.Should we consider a titer test? It's definitely worth discussing with your healthcare provider. We're navigating a gray area, balancing the need for protection with the limitations some face in getting the vaccine. So, what can we do? Stay vigilant for symptoms: cough, runny nose, pink eye, and the telltale rash. If you suspect measles, take precautions, especially in your dental practice. Some may wonder if natural immunity from contracting measles is a good alternative. While there may be some immunity, the risks of lifelong complications from the disease outweigh the potential benefits.Ultimately, it's a personal decision — but be sure to stay safe and informed!

Wondering about the new mandatory DEA requirement for an 8-hour opioid training? In case you missed it, we covered this topic on our "Medical History Mysteries" diving into the details! Here's the scoop:The DEA's guidelines are a bit fuzzy, with phrases like "training in managing patients with opioid or substance abuse disorders" and "safe pharmacologic management of dental pain." Interpretation is key here. You can fulfill the training through various formats: classroom settings, seminars, or virtual offerings. But which course to choose? The DEA doesn't certify any specific one, leaving it up to you.The ADA offers several courses that could help meet the requirement, including one that might just be mine (shh, don't tell). But here's an update since our last podcast: the DEA confirmed there's no statute of limitations for past coursework to qualify. How far back can you go? That's the million-dollar question. The ADA FAQ also mentions that you need to check a box on your DEA registration, affirming completion of the training. No need to submit proof... yet. But what if you accidentally check that box without doing the course? The DEA says they're not planning audits solely based on this, but you never know. So, what's the bottom line? Take the course, keep your certificate safe, and hope no one asks too many questions. But knowledge is power, right?Watch the full video at: https://lnkd.in/e4HS4Vn3For more info, check out the ADA FAQ or reach out to the DEA. And hey, shameless plug time! Wondering about the new mandatory DEA requirement for an 8-hour opioid training? Here's the scoop: The Medication Access and Training Expansion Act, or M-A-T-E, passed in December 2022, made it mandatory for all DEA registrants to complete an 8-hour opioid education course. But here's where it gets tricky...The requirement went into effect on June 27, 2023. If you renewed your DEA certificate before that date, you're off the hook. But if not, it's time to hit the books. The DEA's guidelines are a bit fuzzy, with phrases like "training in managing patients with opioid or substance abuse disorders" and "safe pharmacologic management of dental pain." Interpretation is key here. You can fulfill the training through various formats: classroom settings, seminars, or virtual offerings. But which course to choose? The DEA doesn't certify any specific one, leaving it up to you.Check out the full video at https://lnkd.in/ecUFkp-PStay tuned for part 2 on how to comply with the new training requirements!
